Italian coaches make history in Champions League

It was a good group stage for Italian coaches in the Champions League, with five guiding their teams to the knock-out stages.

Three of the four Serie A representatives in the competition booked their spots in the Round of 16. Napoli, Milan and Inter will all take part in the knock-out stages, with only Juventus failing to progress to the next stage following their poor European campaign.

As highlighted by OptaPaolo, five Italian coaches have progressed to the Champions League Round of 16 in the same season for the first time ever. Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, Antonio Conte’s Tottenham, Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli, Stefano Pioli’s Milan and Simone Inzaghi’s Inter will all be competing in the knock-out stages.

Massimiliano Allegri will be frustrated as his Juventus side have dropped down to the Europa League. They’re now waiting to see which team they’ll face in the play-offs.

The Champions League Round of 16 draw will take place on Monday November 7 at 11.00 UK time.
