Lyon coach and former Italy international Fabio Grosso has taken to Instagram to share his thoughts for the first time after being injured in an attack on his team’s bus while travelling to the stadium for a Ligue 1 match against Marseille on Sunday.

Grosso had sustained facial injuries as flying objects shattered the glass of the team bus and required 12 stitches upon arrival at the Stade Velodrome.

Grosso had been due for a reunion with fellow 2006 World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso, currently in charge of Marseille, however the game was called off before kick-off.

Reflecting on the weekend’s unsavoury events, Grosso told his followers on Instagram: “What happened on Sunday night could have been a tragedy, it certainly was for the sport and for all those who love it.

“I hope with all my heart that this can be a lesson for the future. Thank you everybody for your kindness and support. Allez l’OL … forever.”
