With Lega Serie A planning to launch a 20-man tournament in America during the World Cup this year, it seems as if the league is preparing for Italy to miss the tournament in Qatar.

The Azzurri have not yet booked their spot in the World Cup this winter, having finished second in their qualifying group behind Switzerland. The European champions now need to go through the play-offs; first they’ll face North Macedonia, before playing the winner of Portugal-Turkey for a spot in the tournament.

TuttoMercatoWeb revealed today that Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo and marketing director Michele Ciccarese recently carried out an exploratory mission in New York, speaking to broadcasters and sponsors about the feasibility of a 20-team tournament in America featuring all the Serie A players who are not taking part in the World Cup.

This tournament, which would feature all 20 Serie A teams, would take part during the World Cup period, although the games would not be played at the same time. This has led some to believe that Lega Serie A are preparing for the possibility that Italy won’t qualify for the tournament in Qatar.

This project could be used to both secure strong viewing numbers from Italy during the World Cup (assuming they don’t qualify) and to grow the profile of Serie A in North America, something that is clearly important to the league, who opened offices in New York last month.

  1. Italy should qualify, we are better than Portugal and Macedonia and Turkey
    Unless if something weird happens.

  2. The comment system seems to be pretty random on here. Sometimes mine get posted instantly, other times it doesn’t work. I dont think there is an admin waiting there to delete them

  3. If not now, when? This is necessary move by Serie A – to grow its profile in North America and elsewhere. It will take many years and lots of effort to match the profile of the PL (for example) so there is no point in procrastinating- just get on with it.

  4. It’s just a precautionary measure in case they don’t qualify, I for one think that we will, Italy can’t miss two consecutive world cups, no way!!!

  5. You guys are all F…ed!!!
Qatar needs Ronaldo !! 2002 all over again. Mancini should of played the young guys that are hungry!

  6. Italy will be there. Portugal is on a downward spiral, couldn’t win one of the easiest groups in qualifying. Provided they even beat Turkey

  7. I’m sure they won’t make the World Cup Mancini keeps making Jorginho shoot penalty kicks. Lol

  8. If Italy can’t beat North Macedonia, Turkey and a declining Portugal squad they don’t deserve to be in the Cup.

  9. Hopefully We Have This Under Our Belt Because We Won The European Cup So We Should Have This One Down Too

  10. ITALY will beat Portugal easily. That one Portugal who could not beat Serbia who was Seventh Seed in Pot-2. ITALY had to beat the Top-Seed from Pot-2. And had almost beat the Swiss anyway when Jorginho messed it up….twice.

  11. The few football fans that are in the USA will be busy watching the World Cup. They don’t watch Serie A as it is sk why would they watch it during the World Cup?

What hair-brained idea those running this league.

What’s more, all it does is tell the players it’s acceptable to miss out.

  12. I hope Cenzig Under scores plenty against Portugal. That’s Italy ticket in because the World Cup needs Ronaldo and I don’t trust any referee if it’s Italy vs Portugal. Any other circumstance, I would take Italy but do we ever need Balotelli. Chiesa and Spinnazolla hurt missing out but we need a change upfront fast and that’s Zaniolo to Balotelli with four Mids and four D. If it were me…4-1-3-2

I have seen Florenzi play there before. He can do it
