Gianluigi Donnarumma’s heroics earned him praise from both the French and Italian media following Friday’s 1-1 Nations League draw between the two countries at the Stade de France, and we want to know if you think the Manchester City stopper is currently the best no.1 in world football.
Donnarumma was voted as Italy’s man of the match in the post-match ratings following Friday’s 1-1 draw away against France after a series of top-class saves that kept the Azzurri alive while they were under pressure from Zinedine Zidane’s side.

French newspapers suggested that it could have been an entirely different outcome had the former Milan man not been in the Italian goal.
Outlets in Italy, meanwhile, have been celebrating Donnarumma’s performance, and La Gazzetta dello Sport have even ranked him as the no.1 goalkeeper in the world in a Top 10 list that was compiled on Saturday.
The Gazzetta dello Sport ranking, which is focused on current form, is as follows:
- Gianluigi Donnarumma (Manchester City/Italy)
- Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid/Belgium)
- Unai Simon (Athletic Club/Spain)
- David Raya (Arsenal/Spain)
- Mike Maignan (Milan/France)
- Mile Svilar (Roma/Belgium)
- Joan Garcia (Barcelona/Spain)
- Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid/Slovenia)
- Gregory Kobel (Borussia Dortmund/Switzerland)
- Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich/Germany)
We want to know if you agree with these rankings. Is Donnarumma currently the best goalkeeper in the world, and if not who? Let us know in the poll below and tell us more in the comments!

Not even close
he’s not even the best Italian. Marco Carnesecchi is better but not given the chance for Italy
Yes he is
With regret yes by far the world’s number one and those who deny it only say otherwise out of jealousy there is no other keeper with his reach. In the post with feet there are better but ultimately it’s in the post that saves the games and win the cups
easily yes
@Garl – I like Carnesecchi very much, and he is certainly a top keeper, but do you think he would have had the same, or better performance against France on Friday? I don’t think so.
Marco Carnesecchi for me is 1b we have 2 world class goalies
@Football 1 – that’s a fair point, but the problem is we will never know because he doesn’t get the chance to prove himself. I watch every Atalanta game and without him they would be in the bottom 3 this year. Hope they give him a chance at some point, even in a friendly, although it won’t change who the starter is. Donnarumma has a tendency to let in a soft goal here and there….Marco doesn’t.
I think Carnesecchi might be a little better with his feet and I’d let him start for Mondays game but both world class players.. just awful that we have two world class players in a position that only one at a time can be on field
This is exactly why we are in decline. One (or several, who cares) good game and suddenly he’s lauded as the best. He is obviously a top, top goalkeeper, but who cares about the labels? What good it is to have the best goalkeepers but cant even get into the world cup? A fortnight ago everything is calling doom and gloom after defeat against Belgium. Now a draw against France and suddenly everyone collectively beating their chests. Just take it easy, these are just glorified friendlies.
Best shot stopper in the world yes but terrible with the ball at his feet
Of course Courtois is the best.
Italian media thought Italy is in the top 10, shameless inter style.
The best keeper? Maybe but who really cares. There are so many very good keepers nowadays. Donnarumma is only as good as the players in front of him. We have a world class shot blocker who makes the odd blunder every once in a while. Donnarumma, like any other great keeper, allows his team to play with a little more freedom and confidence because his teammates believe in his ability to keep them in a game or even steal them a game. He is no doubt one of the best, a big personality to match his stature, great leader too. We are lucky to have him… the goalkeeper position is the least of our concerns.
Donnaruma made some amazing saves against France, it’s true. And he is BIG. He really fills the goal. But, and there is a but, when the ball comes to his feet things get nervous. Overall he is an asset.
carnesechi and caprille and provedel are better
Carnesecchi Should get the start tomorrow
