Simone Inzaghi has claimed Lazio’s qualification for the last-16 stage of the Champions League is worth as much as a trophy: ‘It’s a pity we can’t celebrate with fans.’

The Biancocelesti were held to a home 2-2 draw by Club Brugge on Tuesday but the result was enough for the Serie A side to qualify for the last-16 stage of the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

“We deserve to go through, we’ve never lost a game so far, we earned it,” Simone Inzaghi told Sky Sport.

“We played a great game even if we couldn’t score the third goal. At the end of the first half I had players lying on the beds in the medical room. They didn’t look great and I asked them for a sacrifice.

“The only regret is not celebrating with our fans because I imagine what could have happened at the Olimpico tonight. We gave them a joy and we are happy.

“This qualification is like a trophy for me, we suffered, it will be right to do an analysis of the last minutes of the game, we could have done better but it is right to celebrate now. We have to go ahead in the league, Saturday we will have an important match against Verona.”
