Pippo Inzaghi ‘challenges anyone to spot a single save from our goalkeeper’ after the 2-1 defeat to Roma. ‘We dominate games and the tide has to turn soon.’

Although they remain rock bottom of the Serie A table after four consecutive defeats, it is worth noting that Salernitana have largely dominated those matches and lost them all by the narrowest of margins.

“Just like with Genoa, we conceded two goals despite allowing only one shot on target,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“The lads have been extraordinary, we had 12 attempts on target to two, against a side with Dybala, Lukaku and more. It is incredible what is happening, we continue to dominate the games against these big clubs when we are decimated. The tide has to turn soon, because it’s not possible to keep playing this well with no results. We can still have our say and the tide will turn.

“I also want to thank the players who said they were available and fought hard with the team, despite the fact they are leaving us tomorrow.”

Those are expected to be Matteo Lovato towards Torino and Flavius Daniliuc going on loan to RB Salzburg. Is Inzaghi expecting new strikers coming in January?

“Boulaye Dia scored 16 goals last season and we do not have someone else of that quality. Sadly, I practically never got to work with him and he is very difficult to replace.

“I had to make do with the squad at my disposal and want to thank Pierozzi, who is a wing-back, but today played in a back three like a professor of the role. Maggiore fought for every ball, Candreva and Kastanos too, these lads deserve more.”

There was an atmosphere of tension in the Stadio Arechi tonight, which exploded on the stroke of half-time when Lorenzo Pellegrini was only shown a yellow card for sliding into Junior Sambia at full speed.

Although it was extremely late, he did only catch Sambia with the trailing leg.

Paulo Dybala put Roma in front with a penalty for Giulio Maggiore’s handling offence and Pellegrini doubled their lead.

The Grigoris Kastanos free header got the hosts back into it, but two penalty appeals were rejected late on for shirt tugs on Antonio Candreva and Ikwuemesi.

“I challenge anyone to watch this game and spot a single save from our goalkeeper. We are very unlucky. We are very unlucky in everything, for example that on the penalty Maggiore was pushed and lost his balance.

“We have to keep fighting with our heads held high and the fans applauded us at the final whistle. I am convinced we can still have our say with this spirit, once we are all available.”

SuperPippo as a player was famous for being ruthless in front of goal and converting half-chances, so can he teach his strikers the same tricks?

“We train on crosses, but there are some gifts that only Mother Nature can give. Admittedly, we had many counter-attacks tonight where we got the final pass wrong.

“I just hope the applause of the fans can give these players the motivation to keep pushing. We won’t always play against Juve, Roma and Milan, even though we deserved to take points there too.”

There is one new signing ready, as Jerome Boateng was at director Walter Sabatini’s house today to finalise the details of the contract.

“I’ll be honest, I was so focused on figuring out who to play this evening that I didn’t pay any attention!” replied Inzaghi.
