Pippo Inzaghi was glad Benevento went out fighting in their 5-3 thriller with Lazio and feels they ‘might’ve done enough to deserve a point.’

Although at one stage Lazio were 4-1 up, it was a surprisingly tight battle to the last kick of the game.

“If you go to Lazio, have 16 shots and score three goals, it means you had a great game. I knew we’d concede if we sat back, so the best option was to come here and attack them,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“I thought we might’ve done enough to deserve a point, to be honest, but luck wasn’t on our side. I still believe this was the right approach.”

Benevento’s next match is a trip to fellow strugglers Genoa, neither of them entirely safe from the drop yet.

“Having so many head-to-head clashes can give you a great chance of safety. Serie A means suffering, but seeing Benevento play with this determination at the Olimpico and feeling so much regret at losing to Lazio must give us a real confidence booster going into the midweek round.”

Le Streghe have shown a tendency to start games timidly and take a while to gain confidence.

“We conceded a goal early that was avoidable, then the penalty was a blow, but against players of this quality who run at you, there’s bound to be goals. I knew that if we attacked, then we could score goals too.

“If they hadn’t disallowed that goal and we’d got it back to 4-3 earlier, I think we might’ve gone on to draw. We fought to the end, we believed, we had our fate in our hands and that’s the mentality I want to see.”

Pippo’s brother Simone was not on the touchline today, as he is self-isolating at home after testing positive for COVID-19.

“I missed him here, but it’s also a struggle when we are together on the touchline, because we both have to fight for our own teams and put family aside for 90 minutes. He deserves credit for doing extraordinary things at Lazio.”
