Simone Inzaghi insists brother Filippo’s failure as Milan boss “wasn’t his fault”. “They’ve changed 5-6 Coaches in recent years…”

Super Pippo lasted only a season at the helm of Milan in 2014-15 as he was sacked for guiding the Rossoneri to a 10th-place finish in Serie A, but Simone believes his elder sibling – who has since taken up employment at Lega Pro side Venezia – was wrongly made a scapegoat.

“It’s been a bit too long, it’s time to do well at San Siro and we have all the possibilities to do so, even if Milan have great quality,” the Lazio boss said ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Milan in Serie A, referring to how the Aquile had not won at San Siro in 27 years.

“They found a good Samp in Genoa but were good at making the moment count.

“[Pippo] wanted to repeat [his success as a Milan player] as a Coach, but it wasn’t his fault. Milan have changed 5-6 Coaches in recent years.

“I’m convinced that we must go beyond the tactics. Our interpretation of matches also counts.

“We demonstrated the ability to play in a 4-3-3 last year, then this year we changed against Juventus and Pescara and showed maturity.

“I expect an intense game against Milan and we have to start strongly, winning the individual battles.”

Inzaghi also praised the Lazio players who did not appear in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Pescara as they came into training the following morning, despite it being a rest day in Italy.

“The lads accept my choices, and there’s a good relationship between us,” he added.

“Those who didn’t play against Pescara trained at 10:00 on Sunday morning.

“This pleases me and puts doubts in my head. Tomorrow I’ll decide who plays, but I remain pleased with our excellent start to the season.

“We still must integrate the new faces from other Leagues and have room for improvement.”
