Pippo Inzaghi ‘would’ve preferred to lose another way’ to Inter after gifting at least two of the four goals and reveals the referee 'told me he made a mistake.'

It was the worst possible start for Le Streghe, as Riccardo Improta accidentally deflected a Christian Eriksen free kick into his own net after seven minutes.

They held out until the second half, and had penalty appeals with Gianluca Lapadula, but capitulated to Lautaro Martinez and a Romelu Lukaku brace.

“It was a tough game that started badly, but we had the chance to equalise with that move that might’ve been a penalty,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

"I don't know if it really would've changed much, but the referee told me he made a mistake.

“We scored the third goal by ourselves too and that’s the disappointing thing. When you play against Inter, it’s tough anyway, let alone giving away goals like that.

“I would’ve preferred to lose another way, but it was an uphill struggle from the own goal and that Lapadula incident could’ve changed it. Conceding the second goal knocked the wind out of our sails.”

Benevento now have just one point from their last four Serie A games, conceding 14 goals in the process and scoring four.

“These aren’t the games where we expect to pick up points and I’ve always said that we’ve done well so far, but absolutely nothing is decided yet. There are teams in the relegation fight like Torino and Fiorentina who have no business being there and we can only expect them to surge later in the season.

“We know staying in Serie A will be like a Scudetto for Benevento and we are a long way off achieving our aims.”

Benevento have just signed Adolfo Gaich on loan with option to buy from CSKA Moscow.

“We wanted Gaich because he has different characteristics to the rest of our forwards. He doesn’t have 90 minutes in his legs yet, but we hope to get him on the bench against Sampdoria, so he can play about 20 minutes,” continued Inzaghi.

“We changed system over the last two games because Iago Falque is not in good shape, I didn’t have Alessandro Tuia, while Luca Caldirola had his first start in two months.

“Anyone who knows me will realise I don’t have much faith in tactical systems, it’s about the interpretation. When I have all the forwards available, I’ll play with three rather than two.”
