“We were missing a lot of players today, and yet we equalised and threatened with two dangerous counter-attacks, but conceding the second goal was the biggest mistake. We should not have allowed them to score there,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.
“Atalanta then obviously have players who can come off the bench like Luis Muriel who are devastating. I am glad Christian Pastina came on for his Serie A debut and did very well.
“Atalanta are a level above, but we did well to hold them off as long as we did. Josip Ilicic is an extraordinary player and we had the chance to make it 2-2 straight after, but without seven or eight starters in our third game in eight days, there’s not much more we could’ve done.
“We were able to discover some interesting young players and other alternatives, our position in the table remains strong, so we take it as a learning experience.”
Benevento barely got out of their half in the first half, but came out more aggressive from the restart.
“We made changes, moving to five at the back. I had considered that until this morning, but didn’t think it was fair to start Pastina and other kids against Ilicic and Duvan Zapata.
“I know Pastina is good, but it was his Serie A debut. I would’ve played 3-5-2 if I had more centre-backs available. After we equalised, I did feel we could turn it around, but we shouldn’t have conceded the goal for 2-1.”
