Simone Inzaghi congratulates his Inter players following a 1-0 win against Benfica in the Champions League but admits they made some errors in the first half.

The Nerazzurri dominated against the Portuguese champions at San Siro on Tuesday and a Marcus Thuram goal was enough to earn all three points.

“I congratulated the guys, don’t forget we returned at midnight from Salerno [on Saturday],” Inzaghi told Canale 5.

“Benfica had played a day earlier, but the lads put in a great performance and I congratulated them because I saw so much intensity in the second half. We hit the post multiple times, but we remained focused. We could have been luckier.

“The fans always backed us and supported the team for 96 minutes,” continued Inzaghi.

“Don’t forget Benfica won the league last season, they reached the Champions League quarter-finals and have already won the Portuguese Supercup this term.”

Mediaset pundit Massimo Mauro noted the Nerazzurri had been slow in the first half, but the second-half performance was much better. Lautaro Martinez hit the post twice and had three more chances to kill off the game. What did Inzaghi tell his players during the break?

“I told the guys to remain in the game and that we had made a couple of errors, but the performance was still good. The team remained focused and had a great desire to win,” concluded Inzaghi.
