Former Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi understood the difficulties facing Cristiano Ronaldo as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner enters the twilight of his career.

The 37-year-old Portuguese star was left in tears after suffering elimination from the World Cup at the hands of Morocco, being visibly distraught that he was unable to lift the world title with his nation. Leaving Qatar, Ronaldo is now a free agent after agreeing a contract termination with Manchester United and it’s still unclear where he’ll ply his trade next.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, Inzaghi discussed the Ronaldo situation and the issues players face at the end of their careers.

“I always say that it’s hard for us to stop, to accept, as it happened for each of us, the end. You never know what awaits you afterwards and you know that what you are doing gives you emotions that are difficult to recapture.

“I don’t know what goes through your head, it’s not easy for a coach to handle. Luckily for me they made me stop, I would have gone on to 39 years old, but some players deserve to finish at great levels.”

Despite his issues this season, it’s clear that Ronaldo is still capable of playing at the highest level, having netted 18 goals in 30 Premier League games last season for Manchester United.

Whilst rumours have linked him with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, the Portuguese star is still seemingly keen on staying with a European club.
