Simone Inzaghi admits Milan were better than Inter last season while Romelu Lukaku is ‘working well.’

The Nerazzurri begin the new season in an away clash at Lecce on Saturday. Inzaghi revealed that he does not expect to see Milan Skriniar leave this summer, suggesting that Inter still need to sign a new centre-back to replace Andrea Ranocchia.

Inzaghi provided the latest team news ahead of tomorrow’s Serie A opener at the Stadio Via Del Mare.

“Brozovic trained regularly and he is available,” the coach said.

“Robin Gosens will start, he is feeling really well and is working every day to improve.

“We’ve been working since July 6, playing many games against tough opponents which is what we wanted. D’Ambrosio is not available, although he wanted to be there at all costs. He will rest until Monday.

“Lukaku is working well, like all his teammates. He is not a new face here, we made our choices by selling Sanchez and Pinamonti.”

Lukaku has returned to the club on loan from Chelsea after scoring 15 goals in 44 appearances with the Blues under Thomas Tuchel. He had won the Serie A title with Inter in 2020-21 with Antonio Conte in charge.

The Nerazzurri won the Coppa Italia and the Italian Supercup last season but could not retain the Scudetto, finishing two points behind their city rivals Milan.

“We have analysed what happened. The last game has remained in our hearts for the support of our fans. We faced a team that was better than us, so we must improve.

“Tomorrow, we start a new season with many teams that have the ambition to win. We are focused on Lecce, a newly-promoted side who have enthusiasm. They have a prepared coach, but we must win.”

Inzaghi insisted that he is still ‘proud’ of Inter’s results last season. “We were united and we worked hard to win trophies. We made it, but now we must look ahead. It will be a tough and strange season because of the World Cup.”
