Simone Inzaghi will meet new Inter owners on Tuesday and is ‘not worried’ about Lautaro Martinez’s contract talks: ‘Directors have maintained continuity.’
Inzaghi spoke to DAZN after a 2-2 draw against Hellas Verona at the Stadio Bentegodi on Sunday.
The Nerazzurri already won the Serie A title last month after a 2-1 victory over city rivals Milan.
“Tonight, we end a magnificent season. Thank you to everyone. The lads are joining their national teams, and I want to thank the Inter family. It is everyone’s merit,” said Inzaghi.
What is the best memory about this campaign, aside from the Scudetto?
“The fans’ celebration will remain inside us and all the lads,” said Inzaghi.
“We did a big thing. It was the title of joy—an amazing ride we completed with these fantastic fans.”
Inzaghi received the coach of the season award before kick-off.
“It pleases me, and I share it with my staff members, the players, and the club,” Inzaghi admitted.
“However, the important thing is to win collective awards. We’ve won six trophies in these seasons and played a Champions League Final. It’s been a fantastic journey but we must enjoy it now. It’s been a long season, which started on July 13. Now, we deserve to rest and then start again.”
Inzaghi set to meet new Inter owners but ‘not worried’ about Lautaro contract talks
This was the first match of the Oaktree era. The American firm acquired the club from Suning earlier this week after ex-president Steven Zhang failed to repay a debt of nearly €400m, including interests.
“I thank the Zhang family because I’ve been on good terms with Steven,” said Inzaghi.
“On Tuesday I’ll know the new owners. Marotta has already said they are ambitious and want to do well.”
Is the Champions League the big target for Inter next season?
“We know what it means to play so many games. We’ll start with our targets,” he said.
“We didn’t hide ourselves this season; we said our objective was the second star. We wanted it so badly, knowing that other four, five, or six contenders wanted the same. We were the best in Italy, and we’ll try to confirm ourselves. We know it won’t be easy, but we’ll prepare in the best way.”
Beppe Marotta confirmed Inter are still negotiating Lautaro Martinez’s new salary. The two parties haven’t yet reached an agreement but Inzaghi is unconcerned.
“I am not worried because I know the club,” he said.
“Although the owners have changed, the directors have maintained continuity and will continue to do so.”
How about his contract extension? Inzaghi has just one year left in his contract, while Lautaro’s deal expires in 2026.
“We will meet, we will talk and see what to do,” concluded the coach.
