Milan and United met in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2006-07 and Inzaghi said ‘three things’ come to mind when he recalls the moment.

“Three things immediately come to mind,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “The looks on the bus: We were all very concentrated.

“The rain: during the first half, and incredible storm came down. The fans: San Siro is always special, but that evening it was even more so.

“Liverpool had qualified for the Final 24 hours before us, that was the team that inflicted a terrible disappointment on us in 2005 in Istanbul.

“We were waiting for that rematch, we really wanted it. And Manchester United paid for our desire to get revenge over the Reds.”

Tonight, the two teams meet again and Inzaghi believes there are ‘no favourites’ in the last 16 tie.

“In this type of games, there are no favourites,” Pippo continued. “You just have to run and fight for 180 minutes and then take stock.

“Above all, I wish the Milan lads will enjoy it. These emotions stay with you and enrich you. I cheer for them.

“[Coach Stefano] Pioli’s team are having an amazing season and I’m struck by the enthusiasm they transmit when they play.

“You can see that the lads want to run, to attack, to bring the club back to the top. I’m sure that next year, Milan will be back in the Champions League.”
