Simone Inzaghi finally let out his frustration. ‘There’s one problem here and that’s Lazio. I wouldn’t have waited 16 months for anyone else and I’ll wait another three days because it’s Lazio.’

The coach steered his team to sixth place in Serie A, having been fourth last season, and at long last let loose on the constant delays around his contract extension.

“I’ll meet with the club on Wednesday,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Last season too, when we were top of the table before the COVID pandemic hit, there was still discussion around my contract renewal.

“It has been 16 months since then, I would only have waited this long because I’ve been at Lazio for 21 years and love this club, and I’ll wait another three days because it’s Lazio.

“I would not have done this in any other situation. I inherited a team that was getting insulted by its own fans in a pre-season training retreat five years ago, now we’ve qualified for Europe for five years running, we brought home three trophies and finished ahead of massive clubs.

“As I said before, there is only one problem here and that’s Lazio. You all know what this club means to me, but of the clubs in the Champions League Round of 16, I was the only one whose contract was running down.

“I always kept going, and was fortunate enough to work with wonderful lads who didn’t listen to rumours, problems, contract talks that were constantly getting postponed. At the end of the day, I take sixth place and some regrets from this season, but also the many good things we achieved.”

This evening’s 2-0 defeat to Sassuolo was further proof that Lazio badly lack strength in depth, as at one stage Danilo Cataldi had to play as a forward.

“When we didn’t have problems with the big players, we were able to beat some really good teams. Naturally, when the star names are missing, we will struggle.

“When the team is complete, we can really have some fun and I think you all had fun too.”
