Simone Inzaghi believes Lautaro Martinez can become his second player to set the all-time Serie A goals record after Ciro Immobile at Lazio, but warns Inter ‘can always improve’ after beating Lecce 4-0.

The Nerazzurri continued their remarkable run of winning all 10 competitive matches played in 2024 between Serie A, the Champions League and Supercoppa Italiana.

Despite squad rotation that saw them missing Yann Sommer, Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu, Francesco Acerbi, Stefano Sensi and Juan Cuadrado, they played in their usual style and emerged with a 4-0 victory from Lecce’s Stadio Via del Mare.

Lautaro Martinez found the net twice, taking his career Serie A tally to 101, with Davide Frattesi and Stefan de Vrij also on target.

“Lautaro is having a remarkable journey, it reminds me of the growth I saw in Ciro Immobile with me at Lazio,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

Can the Argentina international set a new Serie A record for most goals in a single season, currently set at 36 by Immobile and Gonzalo Higuain?

“Only time will tell, he just needs to continue like this. I had the doubt tonight to start him or Marko Arnautovic, but after the match with Atletico Madrid, Arnautovic had a few issues and a bit of a temperature too, so I decided to go with Lauti.”

Alexis Sanchez also impressed with an assist, while Arnautovic scored midweek against Atletico Madrid.

“I did not need these performances to reassure me, I already knew these strikers could make their presence felt.”

This means Inter have won all 10 competitive matches in 2024 played in Serie A, the Supercoppa Italiana and Champions League.

“Of course we can still improve and there are many months to go before the end of the season. It is right to be pleased with the current form, but we mustn’t get distracted by the statistics. We must always try to improve ourselves, for example the Blin chance for Lecce.

Atalanta are coming up on Wednesday and there will be many games to play, so we need everyone, as we saw today. There is a very long way to go this season and we must remain concentrated, even when we are asleep.

“There is a lot of work behind these results and fortunately I have a staff who know me so well, while the club supports us. Seeing the team play this well is the greatest satisfaction.”
