Simone Inzaghi believes Inter should see their performance against Liverpool as ‘a self-esteem boost, a starting point that augurs well for the future’ in the Champions League.

The Nerazzurri dominated for long periods at San Siro, hitting the crossbar with Hakan Calhanoglu and pinning the Reds back, but Liverpool scored with their only two shots on target.

Champions League | Inter 0-2 Liverpool: Clinical finishing the difference

Those were a glancing Roberto Firmino header from a corner and Mohamed Salah effort that squirmed between a sea of legs.

Although away goals no longer count double, losing 2-0 at home is still a devastating blow for Inter after that performance.

“We hope not to face Liverpool every game!” smiled Inzaghi on Amazon Prime Italia.

“I am happy and proud of the team, unfortunately during our best period of the game we were not rewarded with the goal we deserved, then Liverpool scored at the first half-distraction we had.

“We certainly deserved more, but this performance has to augur well for what is to come in the future. Liverpool are one of the two best teams in Europe in my view, Inter held out well and deserved more.

“We know these evenings can be like this, but it has to give us a self-esteem boost, because it was an excellent performance.

“It’s difficult to comment after a result like this, but it has to be a starting point for Inter at this level. I think this is the strongest opponent we’ve faced this season.”

  1. Inter had a 15 minute spell at the start of the second half and that was it. They gave everything and competed well but they didn’t have one shot on target. Liverpool were worthy winners.

  2. An objective football analyst would agree as for the progress, unlike the player-haters in this comment section.
However, I wouldn’t say (this) Liverpool were the strongest opponent faced this season.

  3. What a joke to say Inter’s performance was progress. Both defensively and in attack they were poor. Disappointing

  4. That is a good statement….the foundation of future team will be Barella, Hakan, Bastoni, Dimarco, Lautaro, Sensi and even Satriano who is doing well now in Ligue 1. Next year the name like Vidal, Handa, Dzeko may not be starting line up anymore.

  5. Must i remind everyone that the best team Inter has beaten in Champions League over the last decade was Tottenham ? And knowing that did you actually think Inter had a chance of beating Liverpool ? you must be delusional ! They only scored 8 goals so far in Champions league – 6 against a team from Moldova! They have not beaten a pot A team in over a decade …Inter is just a provincial team with no ambition to make the quarterfinals since it’s been over a decade since they last did that too !

  6. LOOK ALL THE JUBE FANS COMING OUT WEARING THE “QUATERFINAL PARTICIPATION” MEDALS AND CELEBRATE LIKE A THEY WIN THE CHAMPION LEAGUE

THE LAST TIME JUBE WON THE MOST PRESTIGOUS CHAMPION LEAGUE WAS MORE THAN A QUARTER CENTURY AGO

    LET THAT SINK IN

MAYBE TRY WINNING IT ONE ONCE IN A WHILE, WILL YA

  7. Vidal is a real step down from Barella (multiple steps down, actually). Bastoni had his worst game I can recall seeing. And Inter again fail to capitalize on too few of their chances. They needed to be 100% to stand a chance and they were far from it. I can’t see the next game a Anfield being any better.

  8. Interrage
To be accourate, come May 2022, it will be 27 years since Juventus won anything in Europe. Antonio Conte started in midfield last time they won a european trophy.

Theres not a single juventini under the age of 35 with a clear memory of what its like to win in Europe.

  9. Inter fans trolling juve while their club was irrelevant the last 12 years and they won nithing depsite a cl trophy. LOL

  10. Milan were way closer of getting away AWAY with points against Liverpool than Inter. Let that sink in.

  11. Milan lost at home to Liverpools reserves. Actually they lost to the reserves of the reserves lol. Let that sink in.

  12. You lost 3-2 lol. Then you lost at home vs Liverpool u19.

Dude, Milan ended 4th in their group, Your european campaign ended in december. You didnt even qualify for the Europa League.

  13. @Sammy

“Won nothing despite a CL trophy” ? That trophy is the trophy your team so desire but can never win, not in your life time

I know it must be very frustrating to be a Jube fan these days. Your team has always been a joke in Europe and now in serie A too

27 year or 0 CL title comes this may and counting
