Simone Inzaghi admits Inter are making too many defensive errors and didn’t close Bayern Munich down enough in their Champions League home defeat. ‘You need a perfect performance.’

The Nerazzurri looked a different level to the Bundesliga giants at San Siro, beaten by a Leroy Sane moment of extraordinary skill controlling the Joshua Kimmich ball over the top and Danilo D’Ambrosio trying to clear another of his finishes off the line, but failing for 2-0.

“Our first 20 minutes were a bit too tense, then we were up against a very intense, extraordinary side, one of the best in Europe right now,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We should’ve done better as a team to cover the opening goal with that Kimmich ball over the top. We did better after that, created chances, but also made too many technical errors with the final ball.

“Dzeko and Correa had opportunities to get back into it, but you need a perfect performance against a side of this level and we didn’t do that.”

Inter have shown a lot of defensive problems this season in Serie A and now the Champions League.

“There were two of our players near Kimmich, we should’ve pressed him and closed him down better, because he had too much time and space to pick that pass.

“It’s true that we have made mistakes that were costly in the derby against Milan, the second and third goal were entirely avoidable.

“I don’t recall huge Onana saves tonight, but we should’ve done better to close them down, because we know Bayern have players like Sane, Mane and Coman who can attack the space at any moment.

“The game was open, we shouldn’t have conceded the second goal at the 67th minute.”

The group is immediately an uphill struggle for Inter, as Barcelona beat Viktoria Plzen 5-1 in the other game.

  1. I’ve not rated them and I don’t see why they are considered one of the top teams in Europe. They move the ball way too slow. Its actually painfully boring to watch them play.

  2. Inzaghi’s men got all the tactics they needed. They were each given a whistle to blow when the bad Bayern men came near them. They’ll be safer walking in twos. Played off the park the whole match.
