Simone Inzaghi praises the Inter ‘mentality’ for fighting back from an early Bologna goal to win 6-1 and shaking off the defeat to Juventus. ‘We kept our heads in the game.’
The Nerazzurri were coming off a bruising 2-0 defeat to Juventus and went a goal down at San Siro to a massive deflection off Charalampos Lykogiannis.
However, they showed great strength to not only turn it around, but win by a 6-1 scoreline, including a brace from Federico Dimarco.
“We know how important mentality is in football. We were up against a team tonight that was coming off four consecutive victories, we conceded an unlucky goal, but we kept our heads in the game,” Inzaghi told DAZN.
“We’ve won five of the last six matches, we are all really up there apart from Napoli who are breaking away. There’s no point looking at the table now, we also have to put the Champions League aside, because it’s all about the present.
“Unfortunately, we played 18 games without Romelu Lukaku and 14 without Marcelo Brozovic, two very important players. We did really well in the Champions League, but in Serie A need to replicate what we do at San Siro to the away fixtures.”
Inter are helped by Milan, Atalanta and Roma all dropping points in the midweek round too, but the fact remains they have lost practically all their head-to-head clashes.
“The defeat to Juventus was very painful, but I saw the lads very concentrated in training. We conceded a freak goal this evening, but I was always confident we’d sort it out.”
Director Beppe Marotta said before kick-off that it was up to the coach to find a solution for their recent problems, so did Inzaghi feel under pressure?
“I’ve been under pressure since I was a player and then became a coach, so I’m used to it. I get along very well with the directors, everyone analyses the games and we have very direct and transparent communication. If they need to tell me something, they tell me to my face.”
Great goal by Dzeko but I have to laugh at the “shades of Zidane ’02” comment. That was a CL game (final I think), not Bologna (with all respect).
