Simone Inzaghi admits Inter’s performance in the stalemate with Fiorentina was ‘insufficient’ and the lack of results is starting to affect the team psychologically.

The Nerazzurri had their third draw in the last four Serie A games, a Denzel Dumfries header cancelling out the Lucas Torreira opener.

More importantly, Inter have won only one of their last seven matches in the league and risk falling further adrift of the leaders ahead of Milan’s trip to Cagliari this evening.

Serie A | Inter 1-1 Fiorentina: Dumfries can only rescue a point

“The first half was insufficient, because a team like ours must do better. We improved after the break, created more chances and could’ve scored another,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“It’s just an off moment, seven points in seven games is evidently weighing on us psychologically. Fiorentina did better in the first half, we did better in the second, I am not satisfied because we made everyone expect more of us.

“Naturally, the team feels more responsibility now compared to the way people treated us at the start of the season. We had a few perfect months, then a dip, but the lads must stay calm and just keep working.

“We are creating lots of chances, just not finishing them off the way we used to.”

It is the second match in a row with Inter going behind and having to fight their way back for a 1-1 draw.

“We had not done well in the first half against Torino, so I certainly expected improvements on that. I am the first to be responsible, as I am the coach. The lads tried against a quality opponent, but we should’ve done better in certain moments.”

Is it a coincidence that Inter failed to win any of their three Serie A games without injured Marcelo Brozovic this season?

“We know these moments aren’t easy, but we’ve been in football for a long time and we know you just have to ride them out.

“It’s too easy to blame missing players. The fact is we did better in the second half, so it wasn’t just that. I would be more worried if we didn’t create the chances at all, whereas in recent games we did create. Perhaps the lack of results is making the team a little more frenetic and not as clear-headed in their choices.”

The next Serie A match after the break for international duty will be against Juventus in a head-to-head for third place.

“We know the kind of game we’re going into, we already faced them in Serie A and the Supercoppa, we will be prepared.”

  1. Good to see that the Inter bandwagon has well and truly stalled. The fact that this team is so dependent on Brozovic and lack real depth in the midfield is fairly apparent. They also don’t have Conte to keep them focused and motivated. Inzaghi has never won anything important and he allows his teams to slip away in the second half of the season. As bad as Allegri has been this season, I’m glad Juve did not hire Inzaghi.

  2. Frankie wise words again but you had nothing to say that night Juventus were thrashed by an upper mid level club from Spain. I agree with you better to stick with PhD Max who thought you played a blinder against the yellow submarine. More slow ball for another 3 years.

  3. Barella just missed two open goal chances where if he actually tries to score then Inter win. However the results is because of Inzaghi he just don’t want to change the system even tho he have the players for it. If that’s hard enough then don’t start Dzeko he’s so clumsy and a wasteful finisher. But this coach just doesn’t see it. Milan will have a very difficult last 5 matches so the biggest threat is still Napoli. However it’s just been made clear that Inzaghi is a weak coach with weak mentality

  4. Their midfield looks weak to me. Fiorentina wisely just pressed them and were able to keep them pegged in their own half. They struggle to break that press and move the ball up. Back to the coach this guy has never won anything and it shows. 1 or 2 games you can dip but after 7 it means other teams have your number and the coach would be at fault for that not finding the right system.

  5. I have a feeling they will still win by the slimmest of margins. They will use their game in hand against Bologna when it best suits them or get the 3-0 default win. Milan and Napoli will mess up and the joke will be Juventus. If they win the derby in April, they could fluke it.

  6. Patron Saint, there’s nothing to say about that night – we all saw what happened – Juve missed their chances and lost the game. Good first half, average second half. We are all aware Juve is rebuilding so these losses are not unexpected. Bottom line is that all Italian teams struggled in the UCL this season, so the problem’s not just Juve’s who at least finished on top of their group. But all we keep hearing is how good Inter is this year – well they’re not that good after all, as there is a good chance they will end up 4th. Milan have done well in Serie A notwithstanding some dud calls from referees, but were absolutely poor in the UCL finishing last in the group so they still have some way to go as have all Italian teams.

  7. Inter are done. They will end up in 4th place.

What a failure considering how they looked at the winter break.

    Inzaghi is garbage.

  8. Winter champions. They can put a cup of snow in the trophy cabinet.
With no Juventino at the helm, they’ll win nothing for some time. No wonder Conte left… He realised he was the one carrying the team not just managing them.

  9. Inzaghi has been exposed to be an average coach. His limitation had been hidden by a period of good form and good luck bestowed on the team. What sickens me the most is the lack of responsibility and urgency from this guy. Yes, the bench has many oldies and Brozo and De Vrij were missing, but he could not string together a decent team with whom he had left at hand. Hectic schedule? Blame on fatigue. International break? Blame on break of form. Exactly how many days in between games do the team need to maintain form and consistency? I would rather have Mou than this guy. Mou at least throw his players under the bus to stir up reaction. This Inzaghi guy is busy with not making people’s feelings hurt. Maybe a good guy as a friend, but a mediocre dude as a coach.

  10. I have to agree with Frankie and Azzkikr. Inter will end up finishing in 4th place as I don’t see them winning all their games until the end of the season. All this talk of the game in hand against Bologna when it is nowhere near a certainty they will even win that game. On top of that, they have an away game to Juve, which I’m pretty sure they will lose.

I try not to criticise managers but one has to question Inzaghi’s choices. Admittedly they lost Lukaku, whose goals played pivotal roles in the title win last season. Dzeko wasn’t his buy but Correa and Caicedo must have been. Why get such players? Correa has never scored up to 10 goals a season and Caicedo, while a decent sub, has been barely given an opportunity. What’s the point of bringing him on after 89 minutes when a goal was needed?

Now the title will be fought between Pioli and Spaletti. Two managers who were deemed not good enough as managers of Inter.
