Simone Inzaghi credits Inter for their ‘desire and hunger to win’ against Sassuolo, hoping they can keep that momentum going in Barcelona for the Champions League.

The Nerazzurri had got back on track midweek with their 1-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League, but had lost four of their last six Serie A matches, so the pressure was on at the Mapei Stadium.

Edin Dzeko was the hero of the hour with two goals around a temporary Davide Frattesi equaliser for the 2-1 away result.

“We were really hungry to win and that allowed us to push past the physical and mental fatigue,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“It was a very intense match against Barcelona, so the incredible desire to win proved decisive today. These two victories give us a boost of confidence and for our position in the table. It’s a delicate period of the season.”

For the first time, Handanovic was dropped in favour of Andre Onana in Serie A as well as the Champions League, but the coach revealed his veteran goalkeeper still gave a pre-match speech in the locker room.

“Handanovic is a valuable member of the squad, on the field and off. It’s the only way we can continue together and he’s not the only one, as the substitutes also gave a big contribution off the bench today.

“Onana played the way I expected, he is a goalkeeper of quality and already proved he can challenge a champion like Handanovic for his place. I won’t say who plays against Barcelona, just as I won’t for the other roles.”

However, with Marcelo Brozovic injured, Kristjan Asllani is struggling to take over, dropped midweek for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and then replaced at half-time today.

“Asllani did very well with Roma, it was not easy, and he was on a yellow card today. I saw a few 50-50 tackles he didn’t go into because of the card. He is settling in well, I am satisfied with his performances so far.”

Lautaro Martinez has now failed to find the net in seven consecutive matches and was only denied today by “an incredible” Andrea Consigli save.

“I told Lauti, I was a striker and I worried when I didn’t have chances, but playing the way he is, the goal will come soon.”
