Simone Inzaghi insists Inter ‘deserved far more’ than a point in the Milan Derby, especially after failing to convert a penalty, and explains the spot-kick hierarchy.

The Nerazzurri will leave this match with regrets, particularly as Ciprian Tatarusanu parried Lautaro Martinez’s penalty.

Hakan Calhanoglu had taken the first kick and scored, while Stefan de Vrij accidentally nodded a Sandro Tonali free kick into his own net.

Both sides had the chances to win it, Nicolò Barella denied by a goal-line clearance and Alexis Saelemaekers thumping the woodwork.

Serie A | Milan 1-1 Inter: Dramatic Derby della Madonnina

“The glass is half-empty, because we had so many chances and missed a penalty, so in my view we deserved far more,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“We were up against a great team who are deservedly top of the table, we’re behind them in terms of progress, but there is time to get back on track and performances like this will give us confidence.”

Inter have not won any of the head-to-head clashes with the other big clubs so far this season.

“Over the last six games, we drew with Juventus and Milan when we probably deserved to win. Milan and Napoli are keeping up a remarkable tempo, but there’s a long way to go and we are up there.

“We wanted to give our fans a victory and I feel we did enough to deserve it. The tempo was very high and both teams probably could’ve done a lot better on a technical level, but it was intense.

“Milan are a very technical side, so you have to tire them out, make them move. We did well in the opening 20 minutes and generally I think we deserved more, we only struggled a little in the final 15 minutes.”

Calhanoglu was a risky choice against the club he left over the summer, knowing the ugly reception he would receive from the Rossoneri fans.

However, the Turkey international showed no nerves at all when converting the opening penalty and celebrating in front of the Curva Sud.

“Our penalty takers are Lautaro Martinez and Calhanoglu, while Ivan Perisic can take them too. Hakan asked to take the first, Lautaro took the second.

“It’s between them to decide, we know how those moments work. Calhanoglu had a great game tonight, he also did very well against Udinese, it’s not easy to leave someone out, as I have many great players at my disposal.”

Inter lost Barella and Edin Dzeko to muscular issues during the second half, so Inzaghi was asked for updates.

“Barella felt a twinge and asked for the substitution. I had a few issues with Dzeko and Bastoni in the first half, so naturally playing with this tempo and so often, the muscles are under strain. Hopefully they are nothing serious.”

20 thought on “Inzaghi: ‘Inter deserved more than Milan’”
  1. Yeah right you got 2 penalties and you fluffed one. If we had handled the ball like Correa did or even on the upper part of the arm the ref would have given you another penalty. We gave Inter too much time, space and respect.

  2. I advise him to take a look at the match stats. You deserved nothing more. Compare Pioli’s post-match interview to this guy, can’t give credit where credit is due.

No wonder his team is trailing by 7 points. He’s delusional.

  3. The ref has officiated the match really well today, don’t accuse him of doing Inter favour just because he awarded two penalties. The first one is a more deserved pk than what alex sandro or cuadrado got againts inter, while the second was clear as day that even a blindfolded ref will award the pk. The decisions regarding the handballs were also all correct. He is by far the best ref who have handled big match this season.

  4. The stats got nothing to do with the game, you can have 20 shots and all of them easy saves, you can have 2 shots and score twice. If Inter was more clinical this games was over the first half. this game was based on scenarios, Inter did everything for Milan and themselves , simple mistake lead to free kick De Vrij own goal, Free kick for Ibrahimovic simple mistake again. Vidal and Barella had clear chances, Milan never had any clear chance. Milan looks more fitter and they have faster players. It was all about Inter they basically created for Milan i mean like simple mistakes lead to something for Milan. Not sure how Mialn are second place , probably like the last 2 seasons are overachieving

  5. @Justin the VAR is a joke and I mean that across the board in seria a. The Penalty given against Alex Sandro a few weeks was soft. Roma should have had one against us and I can swallow my pride here. I agree that the second was clear but the first one was dubious. I agree with Davide, If we had a ball come into contact with the arm position I am sure the Inter players would have harassed the ref and he would have given it. Considering we had to play Toure and there was no Maignan I think we did what we needed to do. Also we nearly won it at the end but the post saved them.

  6. Luan you high? Overachieving more like you are underachieving as you are still 7 pts behind. Just be thankful all you had was 2 penalties and the post saved your ass. You also had a full squad and we were missing Hernandez and Maignan. Do not worry I am sure the var will also help you when you play Napoli at home. That is the nature of football so there is no point looking back in hindsight. Typical Inter fan always making excuses just like your coach.

  7. Luan are you for real ? Milan chances are simply mistakes? No wonder your team are struggling because you don’t have respect for your opponent. Conte team has respect. He takes responsibility if he lost, but Inzaghi always want to find excuses . That is why conte is unique and classic . I read Inzaghi post match I saw the reason why u guys are struggling because he is still a learner . And stop being bitter being bitter and delusional. You haven’t beaten any of the top side this season . You are inter fans thinks your team is Galaticos. Conte was just your messiah. Nothing special about ur 24 man team

  8. @ Luan

How long is it that you are watching football? Ask any coach, every goal or even dangerous chance in football is the result of one or some mistakes by the other team, be it a technical error or a tactical one. A perfect game without mistakes will end 0-0.

By your logic, at the end of day, Inter only scored from a dubious penalty and the post saved them at the death. Anyway, it’s funny how you and other Inter fans think Milan is overachieving or just lucky. Well maybe we are. You can wait until our luck runs out, see ya at the end of the season.

  9. When I read these comments by AC fans, I feel with them, I know how it feels to be trophyless for so long, it makes you arrogant and aggressive. I thought it was fantastic game, probably the best game of the year so far. High tempo from start to finish. Why you just don’t admit that, that we both had a great game and it was entertaining draw. Inzaghi is not complaining about anything, did you even read? The chances of Barella, Vidal and the Lautaro penalty were 100% opportunities, that you score 9 out of 10. De Vrij scores a freak own goal. So of course he has right to be disappointed, but he didn’t complain about the referee or the Milan tactics. He praised them. Milan was better in the last 15 min only, Inter dominated the first 75. AC performances this season were stellar, got maximum from every game. They play very bravely and with determination, I have great respect for them. But Inter has more talent, higher ceiling and the season is very long. 7 points are nothing with 26 games left to play

  10. These milanisti think they won scudetto allready🤣🤣
Yesterday you got a draw tnx to own goal and didnt have a shot on a goal until 5 min left. I remember this time last year was the same and everybody know how that end up so enjoy now cose like every year you will fight for the 5th😁

  11. @Borche do not worry about us being without a trophy we still have more than double your CL haul. I know your pain but lets not forget your club cooked up the whole calciopoli scandal as you couldn’t win since 1989 and were known as the loveable losers of Italian football. Those 5 Scudetti should have an asterisk and you are really the 14 times champions. I will give credit you won fair and square last season but needed the Bianconeri to achieve your goals. Your fans were so happy to have Conte and Marotta come help you out and you did not even kick up a fuss as you went beyond shame. At least I can respect Juventus to a certain extent as they never copied other teams. I think you even changed the badge just because they did it.

  12. @Borche

You make no sense. How being trophyless makes one arrogant? I stopped reading after that nonsense.

    @Drogo

Inter had 3 shots on target in total (like the whole game) and two of them were penalties. LMAO Jog on now mate.

  13. @ Davide

Oh, so when you were getting our players 20 years ago (Pirlo, Seedorf) you were geniuses. When we took Juve’s best weapons we are shameless. What’s shameless about getting your rivals weapons? If they were willing to come, it means they have not been treated fairly where they were. I have always respected AC because they are class. I’ve always hated Juve because they know nothing else but cheating. And have 0 class. If you are trying to say that they weren’t cheating and they didn’t deserve the calciopoli punishment, that’s simply not true. They were cheating for years, there is plenty of evidence. I don’t know how old you are, but I was watching all those games in the 90’s-00’s. Try to accept it, we’ve done nothing wrong. We competed fairly and are the last Italian champions league winners and current Italian champions.

    @ Milan Fan

The opposite of confident is arrogant. You guys don’t sound very confident with your biased, unfair judgment of yesterday’s game. I was like that when we couldn’t win for years, so I know how you feel. All newspapers said it was spectacle, the referee got a 10 and every decision right (based on all 3 biggest newspapers). I’m congratulating you about it, and you are so salty, you won’t accept it :). Good luck mate

  14. @Borche you cooked up the calciopoli so behave yourself. You had Guido Rossi, Tronchetti Provera and Kingpin Moratti cook up the whole thing as you could not win since 1989 with all the money thrown against the wall. I guess Cannavaro for Fabian Carini was the last straw. I am not defending Juventus but we even had points docked as you wanted a clear run at the title and Fachetti was also doing the exact same thing. That is in the past now but why you will get it as the disrespect you showed our club, as if we are some second rate club from the north pole is not right. You won a title last year congrats but you wanted Juventus of all clubs to give you a guard of honour. Like that would ever happen. Did you give them one in the last 10 years, don’t think so. I got nothing against the Inter fans but as a club you are classless. In the nineties you won nothing but I did not rub it in. Things change so remember that.

  15. Interesting how some fans here(Probably inter fans) say Milan are overachieving. Maybe they are.. but with all the injuries and absence we have had to deal with, yeah we probably are. But certain people questioning how they are ahead by 7 points ahead is pretty clear, we beat Atlanta and Lazio, you didn’t. situations like that..

And yes it’s a long season and yes we might lose a bit intensity like last season as you have said.. But guess what?.. that was conte and this is Simone Inzaghi, and his teams are also not durable towards the tail ends of the season. And just pray you don’t have to deal with the amount of absence and injuries we have had to..

  16. Don’t feel bad, Inter dropped 2 points against Juve and 3 against Lazio……and you still have to face Napoli and Atalanta ……. just make sure you don’t drop points to Shaktar in champions League because week 6 is Real Madrid – Inter and Sheriff faces Shaktar
