Inter coach Simone Inzaghi reveals that the club’s target at the beginning of the season was to finish in the top four and explains why the Nerazzurri have been more vulnerable over the last month.

The Nerazzurri collected just one point in their last three Serie A games and lost the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Liverpool at the Stadio Meazza. They sit second in the Serie A table, two points off leader Milan, but with a game in hand.

The Serie A champions return to the pitch tomorrow in an away game at Genoa. Would Inzaghi thought he’d be in this situation at the beginning of the season?

“I know that the owners asked me to finish in the top four, qualify for the Champions League Round of 16 and win the Supercoppa,” Inzaghi said at a press conference today.

“Right now, we need balance and I saw that within the team and the club. We have analysed what we could have done better in the last games.

Lautaro Martinez hasn’t yet scored in 2022, while Edin Dzeko has only found the net twice in the last eight Serie A matches.

“We still have the best attack in Serie A, we have no problems with our strikers,” said Inzaghi.

“I’d be worried if we could not create goal-scoring opportunities. We had 20 shots on target against Sassuolo and created many clear chances. I am convinced that we’ll return to scoring soon.

“We were not as vulnerable in the first part of the campaign, perhaps because we were mentally fresher. We know we have to attack and defend better. We must improve.”

Genoa are involved in the survival race and have won just one game this season but are unbeaten in the last four games under Alexander Blessin.

“They’ve played good football in the last four games and managed to get a result,” said Inzaghi.

“We’ll face an organised team that is fighting for survival. It will be a tough game.”

There is also good news for the Nerazzurri as Robin Gosens will soon return to action, while Marcelo Brozovic will soon sign a contract extension with the Serie A giants.

“Gosens completed a full training session with the team for the first time yesterday,” said Inzaghi.

“He’s been out of action since September and we all believe in him. I’ll talk to him today and we’ll make a decision. He hasn’t played for nearly five months, we need patience, like with Joaquin Correa. He could be available for the derby and he is an important resource for us.

“Brozovic is also crucial. His extension is as important as those of Lautaro and Barella and I hope that Perisic and Handanovic will also extend. The club is in charge of this. Chiefs are working 24/7 to make the team competitive.”

  1. That’s absurd aim to be honest. Sure, you guys are bereft of Conte, Hakimi and Lukaku, but aiming only top 4 when you have the best squad in the league is strange. Maybe you don’t wanna give too much pressure to Simone, but still.

  2. at beginning of the season no one count inter as favorite scudetto contender..now they still have 1 game in hand to be capolista
