Simone Inzaghi and Inter feel ‘angry’ after fumbling a 2-0 lead for the 2-2 draw with Bologna. ‘This result is difficult to accept, there is an issue of concentration.’
It had all been going so well for the Nerazzurri, who understanding the danger of their opponents, decided to use the same starting XI that beat Benfica 1-0 in the Champions League midweek.
Francesco Acerbi nodded in a corner and moments later Lautaro Martinez thumped a scorcher from distance to give them a 2-0 lead after 12 minutes.
However, Lautaro Martinez had both arms around Lewis Ferguson for a penalty converted by Riccardo Orsolini and Joshua Zirkzee completed the Bologna comeback in the second half.
“Naturally, I am angry and we all are in the locker room. It’s the second time we have taken the lead and didn’t win, last time we ended up losing to Sassuolo, today we made errors and distractions that we cannot allow,” Inzaghi told DAZN.
“We could’ve scored more goals both in the first half and especially after the equaliser, because it was an Inter monologue. Unfortunately, these distractions are costly during an otherwise very good performance.
“When we were 2-0 up, considering all that we had created and done, this draw is difficult to accept. We have to keep working and improving even more.”
Inter have taken the lead in the opening half-hour five times in Serie A this season, confirming they start with the right attitude.
“I think there is an issue of concentration. When 2-0 up, we should not have made the error of letting Bologna back into it with that penalty. As for the equaliser, we could’ve cleared it earlier, held our positions better, we will evaluate all of this when the lads come back from international duty, because these are damning points we have dropped.”
It is the first time Inter failed to win after a two-goal advantage in Serie A since the 3-3 draw with Fiorentina in February 2019.
“We have a lot of experience now, we should know that every game is difficult and not allow the opposition back in after taking a 2-0 lead. If the opponents do get back into it, that ought to be for a stunning goal, not our own errors.
“It was not just Lautaro’s fault on that corner, the others should’ve covered their zones better too.”
When asked if Marcus Thuram was substituted by Alexis Sanchez for a physical issue, Inzaghi insisted it was simply a “technical decision.”
Milan visit Genoa this evening and a win would allow them to go clear at the top of the Serie A table going into the break for international duty.
“Our mood must be affected by this game and not others. We control our own destiny and have to focus only on ourselves.”
