Simone Inzaghi maintains Inter lost to Roma after their ‘best performance of the season’ and suffered a ‘completely undeserved defeat. I saw my Inter again this evening.’

The Nerazzurri will find it very difficult to get back into the Scudetto race now, as they have lost four of their eight Serie A games so far this season.

Only once before had they suffered such a disastrous start to a campaign, in 2011-12.

Federico Dimarco had put them in front at San Siro this evening, after an Edin Dzeko goal was ruled offside, but Paulo Dybala’s volley and a Chris Smalling header on Lorenzo Pellegrini’s free kick turned the game around.

Roma had not beaten Inter home or away in all competition since February 2017, which was also a result at the Stadio Meazza, and it’s the worst way to prepare for the Champions League against Barcelona.

“We know Tuesday will be an important Champions league game, but it’s natural to be disappointed after today’s completely undeserved defeat,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“This is football, it was our best performance of the season and we emerged empty-handed, it is a painful one.”

Also causing concern is the fact that all four of Inter’s Serie A defeats have been after initially taking the lead.

“It’s what I said in the press conference yesterday, that we need to work more on the details. Our goalkeeper didn’t make a save this evening, we hit the woodwork, but evidently what we are doing so far is not enough.

“As a coach, I received a wonderful response from the team in terms of performance, the chances created. It was our best performance of the eight Serie A games this season.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to celebrate with the fans, who cheered us on non-stop, and we’re here licking our wounds again.”

Pitch-side reporters noted that just before the Roma winner, Inzaghi was ready to introduce Matteo Darmian, but changed it to Tucu Correa. Was Kristjan Asllani always set to be replaced, though?

“At that moment, he would’ve come off anyway. I also had Calhanoglu needing to come off, while Brozovic wasn’t available and Gagliardini insisted on coming to the bench even though he was by no means ready to play.

“We changed system to mirror Roma late on with Correa. Paradoxically, this was the game where we struggled the least against Roma and yet we lost, having beaten them three times last season.”

Will Andre Onana replace Samir Handanovic in goal against Barcelona in the Champions League midweek?

“I have not made a decision yet, we will evaluate the game and make a decision.”

Does Inzaghi consider himself at risk of potentially getting fired if results don’t take a big turning point?

“Every coach is at risk, every game and every week. I received a strong response from the squad, that did what it needed to do. We just need to work on the details, as both goals should not have been conceded, for example on the set play we had practiced to start the offside trap and move faster.

“Naturally, defeats never make you feel relaxed, but we analysed the Udinese loss and that was not up to our usual standards. Tonight I saw my Inter again, the team that allowed us to win two trophies last season.

“We got ourselves in this situation and now we need to work hard to get ourselves out of it. You need results to feel confident, at the moment we pay for every little distraction. We all need to do more, starting with myself as coach.”

  1. Really, I hope not. The looked like a bunch of bar league players (and that’s an insult to bar league players everywhere!)
