The Rossoneri have the chance to put themselves in a strong position to claim the third and final Champions League spot, with the next three fixtures seeing them face Sassuolo, Torino and Atalanta.

“I’m not looking beyond tomorrow,” Inzaghi insisted in his Press conference ahead of the game.

“I have to think about Sassuolo and think about how we can win. It’s good that we’re playing in front of our own fans, we have to try and make them proud.

“That’s the correct way, I wasn’t worried when we played Napoli, Roma and Real Madrid, those games are easy to prepare.

“With regard to third place, we’re taking it one game at a time. The table will reflect what we’ve done. If we play the way we did against Roma, Napoli and Real then we can do well.

“We’ll see how it goes, when we face Sassuolo it [third place] is within our reach.

“The aim is to get some consistency, it would be a shame if we didn’t build on the Real Madrid result [a 4-2 friendly win].

“Sassuolo are well organised and well coached, we know the dangers.

“We will have to be at the level we’ve attained in recent games. A team which gets a result against both Roma and Juve are no mugs.

“We’re aware of their strengths, and we’ve approached the game in the right manner.”

The Neroverdi actually attempted to lure Inzaghi to their bench last season, after parting company with Eusebio Di Francesco, and the Coach admits he retains a fondness for the club.

“I’ve thought a lot about what would have happened if I’d gone to Sassuolo.

“Last year was very gratifying for me, the President and the club wanted me in Serie A. It was a gesture of respect and recognition.

“Ever since then, when we’re not playing them I cheer for Sassuolo.

“They made me feel important, despite never having played for them. They’re a great example for Italian football.”
