Simone Inzaghi explained why Milan Skriniar was left out of Inter’s Coppa Italia win over Atalanta and touched on the importance of the quarter-final victory.

The Nerazzurri booked their spot in the semi-finals of the competition thanks to a Matteo Darmian strike just before the hour mark. The Milanese side held firm in a cagey affair with Atalanta and saw out the victory, booking a final four clash against the winner of JuventusLazio.

Inzaghi will be hoping the victory gives Inter a little boost ahead of their key Derby della Madonnina clash against rivals Milan, scheduled for February 5.

Speaking to Sportmediaset after the game, Inzaghi first discussed the importance of Inter’s quarter-final win.

“Absolutely yes, we wanted it so much. We won this tournament last year, we have it on our shirt. We prepared this match in the best way, we were concentrated from the first to the 95th minute. The opponents were in great shape, but they found a great Inter side that won with merit.”

He explained why Skriniar did not take part in the match.

“I decided to exclude him to leave him quiet but there are no problems with him. Until June 30 he’ll be with us, he’ll train as best he can, he’s a professional. Then from time to time I will choose whether to use him.”

The Italian coach commented on the criticisms levied at the team after they pick up a draw.

“The facts speak, the pitch speaks. We always have to play games like this, trying to move forward in every competition.

“It’s not easy but in front of our fans, we wanted this qualification, we gave our fans a great joy. Let’s not forget that we were up against one of the most in-form teams.”

He spoke highly about veteran defender Francesco Acerbi.

“He has great concentration, he works a lot. But talking about him would be reductive, everyone did very well today.”

Finally, Inzaghi highlighted the growth of Romelu Lukaku after his issues with injuries this season.

“Good, today good. I’m very happy with the way I see him working, then from time to time I’ll have to make choices. Correa is also regaining his condition, but for Romelu I’m happy because the more time passes, the better he gets.”
