Simone Inzaghi is confident Lazio deserved their 2-1 victory over Fiorentina. “When you take the initiative, you often end up winning.”

The Aquile snatched a late Ciro Immobile winner at the Stadio Franchi after Joaquin Correa and Federico Chiesa goals, but it was a controversial match.

Manuel Lazzari was denied a penalty in the first half, then there seemed to be a Jordan Lukaku foul in the build-up to the Immobile header.

Manuel Lazzari was denied a penalty in the first half, then there seemed to be a Jordan Lukaku foul in the build-up to the Immobile header.

“It was an important win and we played very well,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“When you control a game and take the initiative, you often end up winning. We were coming off Thursday’s defeat at Celtic Park and it wasn’t easy to prepare for this match in a day and a half, seeing as we only got home on Friday at 5am.

“The lads did really well, but we know that we have a lot of work to do on our weaknesses. Over these nine Serie A games and three in the Europa League, we got it badly wrong for only two halves of football. We should have more points than we do, but we’ve got to keep improving.”

It could’ve been 3-1 for Lazio deep into stoppages, but Felipe Caicedo’s penalty was saved by Bartlomiej Dragowski.

“Immobile was meant to take the penalty,” revealed Inzaghi. “Caicedo is a good penalty taker, but Immobile decided to hand it over, as he knows what Caicedo has done for us over the last couple of years and what it meant to him.”
