Sassuolo scored the opener form the penalty spot after eight minutes and then Lukas Haraslin was sent off in the 49th minute, leading to a storm against the Neroverdi goal.

But Inzaghi’s men could break down the Sassuolo wall and some fine saves by Andrea Consigli made sure the three points stayed at the Mapei Stadium.

“I’m still satisfied with the performance of my team,” Inzaghi said at a press conference. “We gave everything we could and lost undeservedly.

“They punished us on the only cross they made and we’re sorry, but it was an excellent Benevento. 30 attempts, 10 shots on goal, a crossbar, two miracles by the goalkeeper.

“What do you want to say to these guys? Even in 11 against 11, against a very strong opponent, we held the pitch well.”

Benevento have 11 points from 11 games and are five points clear of relegation before the other games this weekend.
