Pippo Inzaghi praised his Benevento players for a 1-1 draw against Juventus. ‘We could have won it if we were a bit smarter on the counter.’

Le Streghe have truly found their form again after five consecutive defeats in all competition, as they beat Fiorentina 1-0 last week and this evening fought back from Alvaro Morata’s opener to hold Juventus 1-1.

Gaetano Letizia hit a splendid volley from a weak Arthur clearance to beat Wojciech Szczesny and snatch a point.

“A few months ago we were fighting on muddy pitches in Serie B, now we are holding Juventus, and we could even have won it if we’d been a bit smarter on the counter.

“These lads deserve to enjoy this evening, they’ve done so well over the last 18 months. When you get a result against Juventus, one of the best teams in Europe, you need everything to go your way,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were short-staffed, as Tuia was out for a month with a fractured cheekbone, Maggio grit his teeth like a real captain to play as long as he could. I had no more players left, but the lads gave their all and achieved something remarkable.

“You would think avoiding defeat to Juventus was practically impossible, but seeing them train over the last few days, I had an inkling we could do it. They will enjoy this, because it’s the first time Benevento have got a result against Juventus.”

Benevento have lost to Inter, Napoli and Roma, but always fighting it out with determination and an attacking approach.

“I went back to Lega Pro, I earned experience in Serie C, Serie B, I wanted to learn and start all over again. We lost a promotion play-off with Cittadella just over a year ago and were so downhearted, but then we broke all Serie B records.

“Tonight seeing my lads so proud and the President so pleased with them, it’s very satisfying.”
