Simone Inzaghi leaves the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu with ‘many regrets’ after Inter’s 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid and reveals Nicolò Barella has already apologised for his reaction foul.

The Nerazzurri needed a victory to leapfrog Real Madrid and take the top spot in this group, but both had already qualified for the Champions League Round of 16 anyway.

They were two stunning curlers from Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio that left Samir Handanovic no chance, while their own finishing left something to be desired.

This means Inter will not be seeded in the draw for the knockouts.

Champions League | Real Madrid 2-0 Inter: Barella sees red at the Bernabeu

“There are many regrets, especially as we did well in the first half, showed character, creating several chances and the statistics were in our favour, but we went into the break a goal down,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“That did not reflect what we saw on the pitch, clearly we wanted a different result, but this will certainly help as experience for the future.”

Barella was rather harshly sent off for a reaction foul after Eder Militao barged him into the advertising boards.

“Barella made a serious mistake, but he is intelligent, he recognised his error and apologised to the staff, his teammates, everyone. The game was still open at 1-0, it will help him to grow and hopefully this means it won’t happen again.”

It was not dissimilar to the 1-0 first leg home defeat to Real Madrid, in which Inter dominated with several big chances and failed to find the net.

“I think we created numerous scoring opportunities and positive situations, plus we were doing well up until the red card. Unfortunately, we did well in both games with Real Madrid and didn’t score goals, so evidently we’re lacking something,” continued Inzaghi.

“Without doubt, the most important thing was qualifying for the Round of 16 and we achieved that with a game in hand.

“We’ll see tomorrow’s results, there are some very strong teams in the draw and the important thing will be reaching that phase in good physical shape.”

  1. Forget this match, prepare for 16 round without Barella….it can use Vidal / Gagliardini/ Sensi as replacement….ready for any opponents, Bayern, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool or even Man U

  2. @Yepe
Asbad as Barella recently is, even Gagliardini can replace him. And he shoud not even be anywhere near Inter.
Even Man U? haha. The only team Inter would have any chance against.

  3. I’m flabbergasted about these reactions. Where were your hero comments when Barella took on the team that was at most taking in 5/10 display scores? A big problem of any club is these clowns who think they know anything about a match analysis let alone football in general and “inspiring” a sheep herd of young fans not knowing any better yet. Refrain from making stupendous post-match reactions to a level of the game and club you obviously know nothing about and do not appreciate as an empathic person in general.

  4. I don’t understand the negativity. Real Madrid were forced to defend at their own stadium. Barella incident changed the entire match and even with 10 men it didn’t make a big difference in terms of performance as Sanchez did very well upfront. This performance is VERY VERY different from the lasf time Inter got a red. Hopefully Inter avoid Bayern, Liverpool and Man City but everyone else including Chelsea and Man U Inter can get a result as Inter no longer play defensive football like Conte.

  5. Stop saying will learn from our mistakes u kept saying that with Lazio when playing in EL make it sound your are bunch of kids
    You style was to slow

  6. 50 % of Inter‘s Champions League Group stage games they scored ZERO goals …….. now Inter will have to learn very quickly what round of 16 soccer is like and you have to score. If you play like you did against Real Madrid don’t face Bayern Munich because they will shred you into pieces.

  7. Any regrets about subbing off Brozovic at 60′?! Game was lost there.

Why bother bringing Gagliardini or Vecino in? Just play Vidal and Sensi.
