Albert Gudmundsson has become the first ever Icelandic player to bag a Serie A brace, but he is already a hero for Genoa and comes from strong football stock.

The midfielder found the net twice already between Serie A and the Coppa Italia this season, along with two assists, before bagging a brace in the first half of today’s trip to Udinese.

It is the first time ever in Serie A that a player from Iceland has scored more than one goal per game.

The 26-year-old joined Genoa in January 2022 from AZ Alkmaar for €1.2m and proved crucial in their push for promotion under coach Alberto Gilardino, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 36 Serie B games last season.

He is also from a football family, as his father is former Verbroederiing Geel and KR Reyjavic player Gudmundur Benediktsson, now a famous TV commentator in his homeland.

His mother is former international player Kristbjorg Ingaddotir.

His uncle is Albert Brynjar Ingason and his grandfather is Ingi Bjorn Albertsson, who from 1987 to 2012 held the record for most goals in the Icelandic top flight.

Going further back, Albert’s great-grandfather was Albert Gudmundsson, who played for Milan and Arsenal in the 1940s, becoming the first ever professional football player from Iceland.
