Inter defender Stefan de Vrij has withdrawn from the Netherlands training camp and will immediately return to Italy.

The 31-year-old centre back was called up by Ronald Koeman for the Oranje’s first Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and Gibraltar, remaining on the bench for the defeat to the former.

De Vrij was part of the Netherlands squad for the World Cup in Qatar but didn’t see a single minute of action, remaining benched for the entirety of the competition.

As announced by the KNVB, De Vrij has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad with immediate effect due to the imminent birth of his child. The defender will now return to Italy to be with his partner Doina Turcanu.

Bayern Munich centre back Matthijs De Ligt has returned to the squad to replace the Inter defender. The former Juventus man was suffering from a virus but has now recovered and will be available for the Gibraltar clash.
