Despite the ban on using whistles to disrupt the match, Inter ultras have still handed them out to ‘make Romelu Lukaku’s life hell’ on his return to San Siro with Roma. ‘He stabbed us in the back like the worst of thieves, let us annihilate him psychologically.’

It kicks off at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza at 17.00 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from this game, NapoliMilan and Monza-Udinese on the LIVEBLOG.

The plan had been to hand out 30,000 whistles to the crowd, but that was blocked by local authorities because it would disrupt the work of the referee and make his own whistle inaudible.

Nonetheless, the ultras were filmed distributing the whistles attached to the traditional Curva Nord fanzine, with a lengthy message about the return of their former player, who walked away after a loan spell from Chelsea and held negotiations with rivals Juventus before finally accepting a move to Roma.

“Let us give a worthy welcome to Lukaku by making his life hell on the pitch,” read the statement.

“Along with the fanzine there is a whistle, let us all use it when the Belgian touches the ball, his every movement must be a single whistling sound. He betrayed us, he did not respect our club colours and must receive the fair punishment. He must understand that our sacred jersey is not a weight on his shoulders, but something to be proud of.

“Twice he committed the mistake, after we defended him with our swords drawn. We were by his side in his worst moments, we believed in him. But then he stabbed us in the back, in the night like the worst of thieves.

“Now let us annihilate him psychologically, without falling into the obvious situation of insults. A shower of whistles, all the stadium must do it, you will find stalls around the stadium where you can pick up the fanzine and the whistle.

“Forza Interisti, let us remind Lukaku who we are.”

The reference to ‘obvious insults’ is part of a previous warning the Curva Nord released on their social media channels, noting that while abuse of Lukaku is encouraged by them, they will not tolerate racist language or gestures.

Meanwhile, Inter released a statement confirming they will not speak to the media before today’s match, as they wish to concentrate on the field and not further fuel the situation that has been created over the last few days.”
