There are reports that Inter were close to an agreement for Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard as a replacement if Milan Skriniar left for PSG in January.

It was a bit of a scramble in the final 48 hours of the transfer window, with Paris Saint-Germain seemingly offering up to €15m to bring Skriniar across the Alps six months before his contract expires.

However, Inter also needed to find a suitable back-up and Relevo in Spain suggest they had made an approach for Pavard.

The 26-year-old can play as both a right-back and in central defence, with his contract set to run down in June 2024.

Pavard is seemingly eager to play in a more central role and would have that in Inter’s 3-5-2 formation.

According to this report, Bayern Munich had an extra reason to reject Inter’s proposal, and that was because they were wary of letting Champions League rivals PSG reinforce with the immediate arrival of Skriniar.

The teams will face off in the Round of 16 with the first leg on February 14.

As for the future, Inter will probably try again for Pavard, facing competition from Barcelona and the possibility he could sign a new contract to remain at Bayern Munich.

He was purchased from VfB Stuttgard for €35m in the summer of 2019.
