Piero Ausilio says Inter could aim for 'more than the Champions League', but must first 'become a team'.

The sporting director planned an extensive transfer market campaign alongside Coach Roberto Mancini, and he admitted that having a tactician of that caliber 'helps'.

“Mancini can boast charisma, credibility, and an international dimension,” he told Il Corriere dello Sport. “That helps.

“I thought he was joking when he told me he wanted nine new signings, but then we sat a table and I understood he was dead serious.

“We knew our campaign was going to be challenging because we were after great players and there aren't many footballers of the quality we are looking for.

“We couldn't sign [Paulo] Dybala and Yaya Toure, but we brought in other players who are equally important.”

Ausilio was then asked the loaded question of whether Inter are capable of competing for the Scudetto.

“I think Inter must think about becoming a team.

“Our objective is that of returning into the Champions League, but I don't see why we should set our sights on that and renounce the rest.

“Come February-March, if we're fighting for something else, then we'll keep that fight going.”

Finally, the Biscione director was asked why Hernanes was sold to Juventus.

“Because we understood that selling Hernanes opened the doors to [Felipe] Melo, [Adem] Ljajic and [Alex] Telles.

“[Juve's director general Beppe] Marotta says we had a deficit? I don't know Juventus' accounts as well as Marotta knows Inter's.

“All I'll say is that we made our own evaluations and the size of the operation (€11m plus bonuses) along with our savings on the player's salary (€6m gross per year) were considered significant by the president and the club.

“The sale of [Mateo] Kovacic? It was painful, but necessary.”
