Italian referee Marco Piccinini is in the spotlight after failing to award a penalty to Inter in their 2-2 draw against Parma. Here’s how Italian sports papers comment on his decision.
Ivan Perisic was hauled down by Norbert Balogh inside Parma’s box in the second half, but the referee waved play on and VAR did not intervene.
Inter’s CEO Beppe Marotta complained at the end of the game.
“It is our duty also to protest at the refereeing decisions. This is our only venue for protesting, as we have no other way of making our voices heard,” he told Sky Sport.
“We realise VAR only intervenes with a clear and obvious error, but today there was a clear and obvious penalty. So either the referee pays closer attention or VAR must be used.”
Italian sports papers all agree Inter should have been awarded the penalty.
Il Corriere dello Sport, Tuttosport and La Gazzetta dello Sport state Balog clearly fouled Perisic with the mistake that is a double one as neither the referee nor VAR noticed it.
Pairetto’s ratings reflect his performance: La Gazzetta dello Sport rate him 4, Tuttosport 4,5 and Corriere dello Sport 5.
