Inter legend Bergomi would ‘refuse to do commentary’ of Champions League Milan derby

Inter legend Beppe Bergomi jokes that he would refuse to do commentary of the Milan derby in the Champions League quarter-finals if the Nerazzurri are paired with their city rival in Friday’s draw.

Both Inter and Milan have qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals beating Porto and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively.

Bergomi, a former Inter and Italy defender and now a pundit for Sky Sport Italia, was at the Estadio do Dragao on Tuesday night, commenting on the Nerazzurri’s 0-0 draw against Porto.

Italian journalist Paolo Condò said he’d like to see a Milan derby in the next round, but Bergomi disagreed.

“If they meet in the quarter-finals, I won’t do the commentary,” he said.

“I am joking, but the derby is always a challenging game. It’s always more difficult, especially for players coming from the academy.

“I hope for a different outcome of the draw. Even the Milan friends who have texted me, want a different opponent.”

The last time Milan and Inter met in the Champions League was in the quarter-finals in 2004-05. The Rossoneri won both legs.

Two years earlier, they had met in the semi-finals and the Diavoli, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, also had the better and went on to lift the trophy at Old Trafford against Juventus.
