Inter President Beppe Marotta has confirmed that the club will retain a buy-back option after sending youngster Valentin Carboni to Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1.

Marseille, who are now coached by Roberto De Zerbi, are pushing to sign the former Monza loanee after an impressive Serie A campaign in 2023-24, but Inter are not ready to lose the recent Copa America participant on a permanent basis just yet.

For that reason, Inter are prepared to send Carboni out to Marseille on loan with an option to buy, but the Nerazzurri would also like to include a buy-back clause should the move become permanent.

Gianluca Di Marzio details that Marseille will pay a fee of around €1m to bring the 19-year-old to the Stade Velodrome for the season, and that they will have an option to buy for a price between €35m and €36m.

Interr, meanwhile, are set to include a buy-back clause in the region of €40m-€45m. Should Carboni go on to excel in Ligue 1 this season, Inter will have the first right of refusal to bring him back to San Siro, or they could even decide to buy him back and then sell him on for a greater fee.

What Marotta said about Carboni and Inter buy-back clause

Speaking at an event in Italy on Tuesday, Marotta admitted that the club are close to agreeing a deal with Marseille for Carboni.

“I believe we will close a temporary transfer with Marseille, always keeping him under control and tied to the club,” the Nerazzurri President said when asked about Carboni.

When asked if he expects any more incomings this summer, Marotta replied: “We’ll see. We are very happy with (Mehdi) Taremi – (Piero) Ausilio and (Dario) Baccin were quick to get him tied up. We are happy that he is our player and we believe he can contribute a lot.”
