A group of Atalanta fans chanted racist abuse at Inter striker Edin Dzeko during the first half of tonight’s match at the Gewiss Stadium.

The chants reportedly came from the Curva Nord, and the 35-year-old Bosnian forward was not afraid to react, shutting up the home crowd with his gestures.

As noted by TuttoMercatoWeb, the fans reportedly chanted “you are a gypsy” at Dzeko, a racist chant based on his Balkan heritage. Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic received the same insult during a match against Roma last week, forcing coach Jose Mourinho to intervene in an attempt to silence the abuse.

It’s likely that Atalanta will receive some form of punishment for this, with Serie A working to improve their response to incidents of racist abuse in games.

The 35-year-old Dzeko, who is contracted to Inter until 2023, has been an important figure for coach Simone Inzaghi this season, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.

  1. Serie a is swirling down the drain. This is just one of the problems. We lose our players so quickly. Insigne would rather play in MLS than Serie a. 🙄 Sad times 😢
