Inter fans on social media are furious with Roberto Gagliardini after a red card against Napoli, which some are calling ‘the worst individual performance ever.’

The midfielder was given a rare start at the Stadio Maradona, as Simone Inzaghi rotated the squad between the Champions League semi-final and upcoming Coppa Italia Final against Fiorentina.

Gagliardini immediately seemed to be rusty and lunged into unnecessary and late tackles, getting a verbal warning early on before the yellow card on 19 minutes.

He was then extraordinarily fortunate not to receive a second card for his high and late tackle on Kvicha Kvaratskhelia at the 24th minute, with the referee giving him one more chance.

Still the midfielder did not learn and finally got himself sent off at the 41st minute for another clumsy challenge on Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa.

“That was the worst individual performance I have ever seen in my lifetime,” wrote Inter journalist Daniele Mari.

The pile-in on social media was immediate, especially as Inzaghi is famous for immediately substituting players who are booked.

“It takes genuine effort to be sent off for two yellow cards in an Inzaghi team. Honestly, I take my hat off to this mini masterpiece.”

Gagliardini “managed to make five bookable tackles in 40 minutes of a match played at the pace of a friendly. May we never see him again.”

Gagliardini’s contract will expire on June 30 and he had said he was walking away because he wanted more playing time, so some Inter fans celebrated the fact this was probably his final appearance for the club.
