Inter equal their worst start after eight Serie A games

Inter’s loss to Roma tonight was their fourth defeat in their first eight games of the Serie A season, tying their worst start to a league campaign.

The Nerazzurri went ahead against the Giallorossi thanks to a Federico Dimarco opener, but their lead lasted less than 10 minutes as Paulo Dybala netted a powerful volley in the 39th minute. Simone Inzaghi’s side failed to bounce back in the second half, allowing Chris Smalling to score a winner for Roma with 15 minutes to go.

As highlighted by OptaPaolo, tonight’s defeat means that Inter have lost four of their opening eight league games, tying their worst start to a Serie A campaign, which came in the 2011-12 season.

In that season, Gian Piero Gasperini was in the dugout but only lasted the five games, being sacked after a 3-1 loss to Novara on September 20.

Claudio Ranieri was brought in to replace him and he did pick up a win over Bologna in his first game, before suffering losses to Napoli and Catania. The team finished that season 6th in the Serie A table.
