Inter director Alessandro Antonello confirms the Stadio Meazza will be demolished and says the new stadium shared by the Nerazzurri and Milan will have a capacity between 60,000 and 65,000.

Antonello joined Milan President Scaroni for a press conference regarding the clubs’ new stadium today.

The Inter director confirmed that renovating San Siro is impossible releasing a few details about Inter and Milan’s proposed new home.

He added that Milan and Inter have changed the initial project for ‘The Cathedral’ making it more sustainable and with more green areas. For this reason, they have decided to demolish the Stadio Meazza in 2027.

“San Siro will no longer be there for an exact reason,” said Antonello, as quoted by Calciomercato.com.

“We have to reduce the cement volume, but there are many ideas on how to keep the memory alive. It’s part of our DNA. Both clubs have a solid bond with San Siro.”

Inter and Milan still don’t rule out the chance of not building the stadium in the area of San Siro, moving to Sesto San Giovanni.

The project for a new stadium at San Siro must go through a public debate ending next month and the clubs’ new home won’t be ready at least before 2027-28.

“Milan and Inter want to invest and part of the money will help the city of Milano,” continued Antonello.

“The planned investment is €1.3b and will increase job opportunities in the area.”

This explains why Milan director Ivan Gazidis explained last month that the two Milanese sides couldn’t build their own stadium as the project would be financially unsustainable.

“We have sporting objectives to be more competitive on national and international fields. But we also have social targets and we are looking for an environmentally sustainable project,” added Antonello.

“The area will be open to the public and respect the highest quality standards. Before the pandemic, the average attendance was around 60,000, which raised after COVID. We are working toward a stadium with a capacity of 60-65,000.”

  1. First 60 and now upto 65 capacity? Still not enough!

Needs to be minimum 70, possibly 75 at full capacity.

Want both Milan sides competing with Europe’s elite? Need modern infrastructure on a sizeable scale to match their pedigree.

Heck even lesser rung sides in England, for example West Ham have their London Stadium capacity at 60 thou!

  2. These calculations are wrong. It does not necessarily mean that people will come by the same numbers even after having a new stadium. Build a new modern stadium, attract more people, and have more income. After all 20K more or fewer seats won’t change the final cost significantly.
