Inter dealt blow in hunt for Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sommer – report

Reports from Germany claim that the release clause in goalkeeper Yann Sommer’s contract with Bayern Munich has now expired, dealing a blow to Inter in their attempts to bring the Swiss international in as a replacement for Andre Onana.

It had been widely reported that Sommer had been available for a fee of around €6m this summer, said to be the same fee that Bayern paid in January to bring him in from Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Sommer was originally brought to the Allianz Arena as an emergency replacement for long-term no.1 Manuel Neuer, who suffered a season-ending injury while on holiday during the break after the World Cup.

However, Neuer has not yet fully recovered from that injury and Sky Sport Deutschland reports that the Bavarians are now reportedly unwilling to let Sommer go until they have a solution to their own goalkeeping situation.

Sky also report that Bayern had been hopeful of signing Georgia international Georgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, although negotiations have now faltered.

Coincidentally, Inter are also said to be fond admirers of Mamardashvili, who is valued at around €30m by his current employers.

After the official announcement of Onana’s transfer from Inter to Manchester United on Thursday evening, it is no secret that the Nerazzurri will need to bring in a new goalkeeper before the start of the 2023-24 season.
