Inter’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Hellas Verona on Saturday afternoon confirmed the Nerazzurri’s status as the Serie A champions for the 2023-24 season.

Inter have taken the division by storm in the first half of the campaign, sitting pretty at the top of the table with a total of 48 points at the half-way stage, five points clear of second place Juventus before their encounter with Salernitana on Sunday.

Simone Inzaghi’s men have posted a record of 15 wins from a possible 19, plus three draws and just one loss, which came against Sassuolo at the end of September.

For comparison, Napoli were just two points better off during their 2022-23 title-winning campaign than Inter are currently in 2023-24. The Partenopei had also lost just once, but had won 16 and drawn twice for a 50-point tally after 19 matches.

If Inter go on to finish the second half of the season with the same points per game ratio as they achieved in the first half, they would end the 2023-24 season with a total of 96 points.

However, while being top of the table at the half-way stage of the season is usually a good indicator for the eventual Scudetto winner, the Winter Champions do not always go on to claim the title.

Inter will be well aware of this as well, as rivals Milan had been at the top of the table in January in 2020-21, only for the Nerazzurri to go on to lift the trophy at the end of the season.

The following season, it was the same story, but in reverse. Inter were the Winter Champions, but Milan went on to win the Scudetto under Stefano Pioli.

Of the 17 times Inter have led Serie A at the half-way stage, they went on to win the title at the end of the season.
