Massimo Moratti insists that it was impossible for Inter to keep hold of Samuel Eto’o and Thiago Motta.

The Cameroon striker was sold to Anzhi in the summer, while the midfielder joined Paris Saint-Germain last month.

Given Inter’s problems this term, their sales have since been criticised by fans and pundits of the game.

“I’m an Inter fan,” Moratti told the Corriere della Sera. “If certain players were sold then it was because there were not the conditions in place to keep them.

“Nothing is done by chance or with superficiality, we always kept in mind the needs of that particular moment.”

Asked whether the club had made some mistakes over the decisions they had taken, Moratti insisted it was easy to criticise with the assistance of hindsight.

“We may have made some errors with a few decisions, but I don’t think we made a lot or even serious ones,” continued the oil baron.

“Football is not maths and strategies for a renewal, that seemed right, sometimes don’t deliver the results that you wanted.

“The problem is that we had become too well accustomed. In these years we found players who had the ability to quickly enter the mechanism of the team.

“There comes a time when we need a bit more patience so that we can evaluate things with the right amount of attention.”
