In response to the recent racist abuse suffered by Romelu Lukaku during the Coppa Italia semi-final against Juventus, Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has called for stronger measures to be implemented and to stop play when racist chants are heard from the stands.

The Nerazzurri official is prepared to present a proposal to the FIGC that would involve the immediate interruption of play if racially motivated chants and insults are heard by an independent commissioner.

According to La Repubblica, Marotta believes that the decision being made by an independent party would mean that the referee would not have to wait until they hear racist chants first-hand and would also alleviate some of the pressure from the officials on the pitch.

The Italian paper has described Marotta’s proposal as an external help, similar to the way in which the intervention of VAR helps referees make decisions on the pitch.

As per the reports, Marotta also believes that a faster and more direct response to racist chanting would help to ease the situation in stadiums before it gets out of control.

In the meantime, the sporting judge in Italy has ruled that the Tribuna Sud section of Juventus’ Allianz Stadium will be closed for their next home game in response to incidents of racism during the Juve-Inter semi-final.
