Inter and Bologna will wear special jerseys in tonight’s Coppa Italia match to remember Arpad Weisz, a Coach who won titles with both clubs before he died at Auschwitz.
The Hungarian was a player for Inter in 1925-26, but was far more successful on the bench where he won the 1930 Scudetto with Ambrosiana-Inter and the 1936 and ’37 titles at Bologna.
With Bologna he also won the Paris World Exposition Tournament in 1937, beating Chelsea 4-1 in the Final.
As Benito Mussolini took power and introduced the infamous ‘racial laws,’ Weisz was forced to give up his job and eventually quit Italy.
He worked in Holland with FC Dordrecht, but the Germans invaded and the Weisz family was deported to the concentration camp in Auschwitz. He died on January 31 1944, at the age of 47.
The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza where tonight’s game will be played has a special commemorative plaque dedicated to Weisz.
