Inter director Piero Ausilio reveals Denzel Dumfries ‘confirmed he wants to stay,’ but the club will consider offers amid Aston Villa interest.

The right-back was widely expected to be sold this summer, as his contract runs to June 2025 and agreeing terms on an extension is going to be difficult.

Manchester United were linked with Dumfries for several months, but now Aston Villa have emerged as the front-runners, especially after qualifying for the Champions League.

“I spoke with him recently, and aside from the contract situation which we will verify over the next few days, he confirmed to me that he wants to stay,” Inter director Ausilio told Sky Sport Italia.

“Then if any opportunities should arise, we will evaluate them, but as of today he is an Inter player and he confirmed to me that he wants to remain.”

Dumfries not in a hurry to leave Inter

Dumfries was purchased from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2021 for €14.25m and his value has sky-rocketed since then thanks to his performances for the Nerazzurri.

The 28-year-old contributed four goals and five assists in 31 Serie A appearances this season to help his team win the Scudetto.

Ausilio also discussed the general situation at Inter, who have been taken over by Oaktree after owners Suning failed to repay a high-interest loan at almost €400m.

The club had effectively been running its transfer strategy on profit from player sales for several years already.

“The idea is to have consistency, as it will be the fourth year with Simone Inzaghi as coach. Our idea of football is simple, we want to be competitive and confirm our status.

“The team is already strong as it is, if there are some opportunities then we will be there, otherwise we are ready for the start of the season.”

They have already picked up Piotr Zielinski and Medhi Taremi as free agents.
